The first thing that comes to mind is willing.
The guy was just so ready to do whatever anyone or any cause needed. I
didn’t matter if it was a Cursillo weekend or a Scout trip. I was honored to
know Ed through the Cursillo movement. The second thing that came to mind
was that we as Cursillistas had taken him so much for granted. Ed was just
always there, always present. He was a fixture in the movement. I know this
will be a big hurdle for all of us to climb. God bless Ed Hobbs, his wife
Gail and their boys. The Ed Hobbs I know lived his faith with conviction.
His example was apostolic. The transition from this life is no less
miraculous then the day Ed was born. It is hard to let go and understand
when God calls. I pray for God’s Grace and Peace to embrace his family and
friends. May they feel the warmth of His love and care at this time.

It goes without saying that Ed Hobbs was
devoted to his family and the love he had for them was apparent by his
involvement with them. Ed was devoted to even a bigger family too; God's
kingdom on Earth. The joy he felt in serving all of us in the church whether
through the scouts, K of C or Cursillo was reflected in his warm friendly
smile. Ed was so humble that if anyone had to guess who was the leader and
who was the worker bee, it would not be obvious because Ed was both. He was
always ready to roll up his sleeves no matter how demanding the task. If it
needed to be done Ed was the first to jump in. He led by his Christian
example which was contagious and inspiring to me. Ed lived his Christianity
and it was a bright light for all to see. I will miss him greatly as a
friend and pray that I can be more like Ed. I think I will remember him as
Saint Ed!

There are so many qualities that Ed
demonstrated to each and everyone involved in Cursillo. Always there with a
smile, handshake and ready to walk over hot coals to get the job done! His
quiet, loving and hard working demeanor probably was a close to the kind of
person Jesus Christ asked each of us to emulate. Always ready at a moments
notice to give of himself for his Lord, Jesus Christ. A wonderful father,
husband and Christian example! As I think of Ed, I truly believe that he got
the fast track, straight to Jesus in Heaven, and what a welcome Jesus had
for him……..a big hug, the eye contact and statement, “Ed, truly a job well
done”. No doubt, he will continue to be there for all of us, asking Jesus to
continue to bless the Cursillo Movement and given the job as our heavenly
representative, helping us keep Cursillo alive and growing. Thank you Ed for
the inspiration and faith you have led so many to embrace. May God hold you
and bless Gail and your children.

Two weeks ago, I was enjoying breakfast at
Village Inn with Ed, like I had done every Monday for the past eight years.
I meet with a group of men to pray, share our faith and offer encouragement.
This particular Monday everyone in the group had to leave early. Ed and I
continued to talk. Before we knew it, it was 8:30 and I said, “Ed we got to
get to work!” Today, I cherish that extra time with Ed.
When I think of a Christian ideal, I think of
Ed’s life. His top two priorities were God and family. Every week we met, Ed
would pray that he would be responsive to God’s will for his life and he
prayed that he would be a spiritual leader for his family. He loved Gail and
he desired that his boys would learn how to live the life as Christian men,
from his example.
Ed was generous in giving back to God, the
time and talent God had given him. His was a life of service to the Boy
Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Cursillo, DTS, St Benedict’s, youth soccer, as
well as family and friends.
There is a shoe company that tells us to be
happy, we need to “Be like Mike.” How about, “Go ahead, be like Ed.”

Ed was truly an authentic Christian. His life
and his family is a testament of his and Gail’s faith. Faith, Grace and Love
were always apparent in all he did at St. Benedicts and Cursillo. We will
miss his smiling face. We are all richer for knowing him and we will
continue to pray for Ed, Gail and the Boys.

The last time I ran into Ed it was at the noon
Mass at Holy Family Cathedral. Seems like every time I ran into Ed, it was
at the noon Mass. I always knew when a Cursillo weekend was coming
up...there was Ed ..at Mass. During Lent I would run into him and Gail...at
Mass. There is a saying that "people make time for what is important in
their lives". Ed made the time.
